Summary excerpt: Audiophiles take note: Apple has quietly added a new section to iTunes called “Mastered for iTunes” that promises music the way “the artist and sound engineer intended.”
Very interesting to read this feature since I think it’s an opportunity for artists and labels. Fact is, digital recordings are generally poor. This is because of the compression used on the files but also because the original mastering wasn’t done for digital, which has its own dynamics. Offering superior quality recordings is the key differentiator that an artist can offer for sale on their site not offered elsewhere. Software like Topspin can be used to sell original WAV files, mastered for digital, direct to fans. Selling high quality files direct will also help build a valuable database for the artist, unlike selling through iTunes.
