Chocolate Rain : Can We Learn Anything?

youtubeOK, so it’s funny and awful and you gotta feel for the guy, but the fact is nearly 4,000,000 people have watched this damn video! Of course the reason it has spread is the comedy value which is difficult for any band to emulate. But I really like the way he put a link to not only the MP3 in his YouTube description but a link to an a cappella version too.  It’s not widely done, but it was an extremely clever move on the part of the song’s author, Tay Zonday, since it allowed people to make remixes and so helped to spread the word. Perhaps something more artistes could consider?

    Some prominent artists still release acapella records, mostly in the dance/hip=hop/techno genre. The most successful artist that I can think of is Jay-Z. My friend put together a brilliant mix of “99 Problems” set to a Guns N Roses medley.

    Chocolate Rain may have gone viral for the comedy factor, but the kid knows what he’s doing and has a good sense of self-awareness which is rare in viral celebrities.
