See Things Differently
PhoneZoo are a ringtone retailer. But wait, before you click off. It’s a retailer with a difference, since they have built a social network around ringtones. Amazed? So was I. But take a look at the download numbers… the top ringtones are selling in tens of thousands – numbers that full track sites would be more than happy with.
The cool feature is actually being enabled to create your own tone with an editing feature, which you can subsequently share with your friends or offer to the rest of the world. It has all the SNS pre-requisites, such as personal profiles, votes and even it’s own widget, allowing you to embed your ringtone on your blog or MySpace.
So far, so good. But as for, good for rights owners? Well, things are a little unclear. Sure, some ringtones are marked clearly with a copyright symbol, which I assume means the creator gets paid. But others, which are clearly copyright material, have no symbol, which opens up once again the problems surrounding User Generated Content. People, you see, tend to have a C.G.T. attitude (thats Couldn’t Give a Toss) towards copyright, which would appear to make current laws in need of updating.
