See Things Differently

“Without our Investment creativity will die” – great myths people in companies like to say….

I hear and read it a lot. It’s usually said in the context of piracy. Company People used to say it during the ‘Home Taping Is Killing Music’ years. And now a different generation are saying it in relation to file sharing. Their argument, i think, is that without investment creativity can’t happen. That artists need time to create, and without the company’s money, where do they find the time? Which seems to be the opposite to the way creativity works. First, think of the truly great works of art that have been produced by satisfied artists with lots of time on their hands. Of course there are exceptions but usually by artists that are driven by other factors – mental, emotional, personal. And surely, it’s creativity that attracts investment, not the other way round?

Obviously, investment can help market the creativity, publicise it and make it popular. But this isn’t the same as saying it wouldn’t exist. In fact, file sharing, P2P, mash-ups and creative commons will, i think, signal the dawning of a new era of incredible creativity. Merging media and art in ways we can not imagine to produce a wealth of new and challenging works.
