How Much Legal Music Do People Own?

Statistics can tell you everything whilst revealing nothing. Take these numbers:

In September 2010 iTunes revealed that 11.7 billion songs had been downloaded and there were 160m iTunes accounts. Assuming iTunes represents 70% of the legal market, that means 15.21bn legal tracks in total.

Now, reveal a statistic saying the average number of songs in an iTunes library is 7,160.

So, a quick crunch of the numbers:

15.21bn / 160m = 95 legal tracks per iTunes account

95 / 7,160 = 1.3% of an average iTunes account is comprised of legal downloads.

What does this tell us? Well, take a look at the picture below. Nice painting of a girl, right? No – look closer…… it’s actually a photo of a girl who has been painted. Statistics & fake paintings – nothing is what it seems.
